Oversight
The
City of Fairmont Legal Department is a service-oriented department
providing legal counsel to the City of Fairmont and municipal boards
and commissions. The Legal Deparment does not provide legal advice to
private citizens.
Functions
The Legal Department performs the following functions.
- Legal advice and service for City officials and employees in conjunction with City business
- Bill collection services
- Answers questions regarding parking matters for citizens and employees
- Processes unpaid parking tickets for filing with the court system
- Prepares misdameanor and gross misdemeanor summons and complaints for crimes which occur in the City of Fairmont.
- Defense and settlement of tort and contract claims
- Drafting of ordinances and resolutions as directed by the City Council
- Legal research in response to the needs of staff and City agencies
- Review and preparation of contract documents and financial instruments
- Prosecution of criminal offenses and municipal infractions
- Drafting of deeds and supporting documents for real estate transactions involving the City
