Public Utilities

The Fairmont Public Utilities is a municipal utility established in 1902. The utility provides electricity, water, wastewater treatment and steam district heat to customers within the City of Fairmont and over 200 rural customers. The utility is governed by a five member commission appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.

Wastewater Department

The City of Fairmont Wastewater Treatment Plant is an activated sludge system. The design daily flow is 2.34 million gallons per day. The maximum capacity of the plant is 6 million gallons per day.

Water Department

The City of Fairmont operates a surface water system with lime soda softening. The storage capacity is 4.3 million gallons with pumping capacity of 3,000 gpm. Total hardness of tapwater is 85-100 ppm. The customer base consists of  approximately 3,925 residential, 476 commercial and 17 industrial.
